Band Mission Statement The mission of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. High School Band Program is to provide an atmosphere in which students learn to succeed at playing musical instruments as individuals and as a group, presenting students with music preparation which in turn leads to a life-long appreciation of music. The band program seeks to prepare students for success in All-State Bands, solo & ensemble adjudication, Honor Bands, Small Ensemble Performances, Large Group Performance Evaluations, Success within the Kings of Halftime Band, and Scholarship opportunities for Colleges and Universities. The band has a set goal of achieving superior ratings at all festivals and competitions annually.
Band Expectations A successful tradition starts with an attitude of success. As parents, band members and band director, all our efforts need to be directed toward creating a positive experience for the young men and women in our band program. A positive experience must start with an understanding of the expectations for those who participate in the band. The following information explains these expectations.
The primary class curriculum of the band is organized into several core classes:
Wind Ensemble – a mastery ensemble with collegiate level demand Symphonic Band – an intermediate ensemble with advanced high school demand Concert Band – a beginning ensemble with high school level demand Percussion Techniques – a rudimentary ensemble with beginning high school skill
